A Place to Encourage the Speech-Language Pathologist

Welcome! If you are a speech-language pathologist, you will understand.  A certain kindred spirit lives within those of us who’ve chosen this particular profession. I believe some of the most selflessly dedicated and empathetic group of professionals are SLPs.  Did I mention smart and funny? Most definitely those too.

It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to this fresh online space. For over a year it has lived in the heart of my imagination. I’m thrilled to finally have it worked into a shape worthy of sharing.

Why did I spend chunks of my winter and summer creating yet another website?  I did it for you. And I did it for me too.

During a particularly discouraging moment last fall in my job as a school based therapist, I impulsively searched online for an empathetic voice. I needed a simple nugget of encouragement from a fellow SLP to help pull me out of the shadows, a voice from someone who understood my frustration. One google search after another kept coming up empty.

I desperately needed a reminder of WHY I do what I do.

This need weighed on me, so all last year I worked to be the voice I was looking for. I began preaching to myself, giving pep talks and intentionally reminding myself of my WHY.

And while out in the “field”, I took notes as this creative spark grew out of my own need. What if? What if I created a quiet corner on the internet designed for the sole purpose of speaking life over SLPs? A place to encourage the encouragers? That spark grew into what I pray will be such a place.

The tagline “Field Notes From An SLP” seems appropriate. Even after 27 years of practice, I am still very much out in the field, learning and growing through trial and error. I’m constantly taking mental notes and making new discoveries about human nature (my own and others). I have to make it a priority to stay motivated in this adventure of improving the communication skills of those I serve.

And I bet you do too.

My goal on this website is to fill the void of encouragement online for SLPs, providing a fresh breath for our weary souls and a place we can trust to remind us of our WHY.

Something Free Just For You

I’d love to build a tribe of SLPs who desire an online community that blesses one another through their speech and language. To that end, I’ve crafted a special blessing just for you. When you sign up to receive my once a week(ish) posts, you will also receive A Blessing for the Speech Pathologist. Simply download and print as a daily reminder of the kind of therapist we all strive to be.

May this space leave you with a little more wind in your sails.

(And if what I’ve said resonates, please share with others who might enjoy coming along as well!)
